Curling leaves are almost always a problem with new growth. Something went wrong while the leaf was forming, so it grew bent or twisted. Old leaves that grew normally won’t uncurl, but once you fix the cause, new leaves come through flat and healthy.

1. Too little calcium

Calcium builds cell walls in new leaves. It can’t move around inside the plant, so a shortage shows up straight away on the growing tips. Leaves come through twisted, hooked or with crinkled edges. This is most common with RO water, rainwater or very soft tap water.

Fix: check your GH. If it’s very low, use a remineraliser with calcium and magnesium for your water changes. Shrimp keepers using RO water should already be doing this.

2. Unstable CO₂

In tanks with injected CO₂, levels that rise and fall through the day stress new growth. Leaves can twist and stems grow crooked. Common causes are CO₂ switching on too late, an emptying bottle or changes in surface movement.

Fix: start CO₂ one to two hours before the lights so levels are steady by the time plants need it, and keep surface ripple the same day to day.

3. Light too strong for the plant

Some plants cup or curl their leaves under very bright light, especially near the surface. It’s the plant protecting itself. Red plants and carpets under a strong light without CO₂ are the usual examples.

Fix: lower the brightness, shorten the photoperiod to 6 to 8 hours, or move sensitive plants lower in the tank.

4. Not enough nutrients

A general shortage of plant food slows growth and can leave new leaves small and misshapen. Make sure you’re dosing both macro and micro every day. Our dosing guide shows how much your tank needs.

5. Pests and damage

Snails grazing on soft new tips can leave them ragged and curled. Look closely at the growing tips at night with a torch. Healthy-looking plants with a few chewed tips are usually fine.

What you seeLikely cause

Leaves cupped near a strong lightToo much light

Change one thing
Fix the most likely cause first, then wait.

Give each change two weeks. Changing everything at once makes it impossible to know what worked.

Quick answers

Why are my aquarium plant leaves curling?

The most common causes are low calcium in soft water, unstable CO₂ and light that is too strong for the plant.

Will curled aquarium plant leaves uncurl?

No. Leaves that grew curled stay that way. Fix the cause and new leaves will grow flat.

Can too much light make aquarium plant leaves curl?

Yes. Some plants cup or curl their leaves to protect themselves from very bright light.

Does RO water cause curling leaves?

It can. RO water has no calcium or magnesium, so remineralise it before use in a planted tank.
