Aquarium Plants Not Growing? 7 Reasons and Fixes
Plants just sitting there? Work through these seven causes in order and you’ll almost always find the one holding your tank back.

Plants that stop growing are frustrating because nothing looks obviously wrong. No melting, no algae explosion, just a tank that looks the same week after week. Plant growth depends on a short chain: light, carbon, nutrients, flow and temperature. Growth runs at the speed of the weakest link. Find the weak link and plants take off.
1. They’re still settling in
Newly planted tanks often show little growth for two to four weeks while plants grow roots and switch to underwater leaves. If your tank is new, give it time and keep the routine steady. See how to start feeding a new tank.
2. Not enough light
Light is the engine. A basic hood light that came with the tank is often too weak for anything but java fern, anubias and mosses. If stem plants grow long and leggy with big gaps between leaves, or red plants stay green, they want more light. Upgrade the LED or choose low-light plants.
3. Not enough food
This is the most common cause in tanks with decent light. Plants have the energy to grow but not the building materials. Signs include pale or yellowing older leaves, small new leaves and stalled stems. Make sure you’re dosing every day at the right level for your light. Our dosing guide has the numbers.
4. Not enough carbon
Plants build themselves from carbon, mostly from CO₂ dissolved in the water. Low-tech tanks run on the small amount that’s naturally there. That’s fine for slow plants, but fast stem plants and carpets struggle without injected CO₂ or a liquid carbon product. Match your plant choice to your setup.
5. Poor flow
Water carries food and CO₂ to every leaf. Dense corners, plants behind rocks and the bottom of thick stems often sit in still water and grow slower. Aim for gentle movement across the whole tank. If plants in one area are struggling while others thrive, flow is likely the reason.
6. Wrong place for the plant
Java fern and anubias rot if their rhizomes are buried. Carpet plants struggle in coarse gravel. Root feeders like swords starve in plain sand without root tabs. Check each plant’s needs. Our guide to root tabs vs liquid plant food explains which plants feed from where.
7. Unstable conditions
Plants hate swings. Big temperature changes, irregular water changes, skipped doses and lights on different timers all slow growth. Put the lights on a timer, dose at the same time every day and keep water changes regular.
| Sign | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| Long gaps between leaves, leaning to the light | Not enough light |
| Older leaves yellowing, small new leaves | Not enough food |
| Healthy colour but very slow | Low carbon (normal in low-tech) |
| One area slow, others fine | Poor flow |
| Rhizome plant going soft at the base | Buried rhizome |
Change one thing at a time and give it two weeks. If you add more light, add more food to match, or algae will use the difference.
Quick answers
Why are my aquarium plants not growing?
Usually it’s light, food or carbon. Check that your light suits the plants, that you’re dosing plant food daily, and that fast-growing plants have enough CO₂.
How long do aquarium plants take to grow?
Most show new growth within two to four weeks of planting. Slow species such as anubias may only grow a leaf every few weeks.
Will more plant food make plants grow faster?
Only if food is the limiting factor. If light or CO₂ is holding plants back, extra food just feeds algae.
Do I need CO₂ for plants to grow?
Not for low-light plants. Fast stem plants and carpets grow much better with injected CO₂.
